Te Deum
- 1Te Deum laudamus
- 2Tu rex gloriæ
- 3Te ergo
- 4Fiat misericordia tua
- 5Te deum
Composition: February – May 1858. On 8-2-1858 Bizet borrowed two choral works by Lesueur, including a Te Deum, from the library of the Villa Medici. Bizet composed his own Te Deum as his first envoi from Rome and also as a submission for the Rodrigues Prize (open to Prix de Rome winners for a choral work). He completed a draft by the beginning of April, and the orchestration was finished a month later. He did not win the prize, which went to the only other candidate, Adrien Barthe. He submitted it as his first envoi from Rome.
It was not performed or published until 1971.
Bars 126–33 of no. 1, 'Pleni sunt cœli', were adapted for the chorus 'Brahma, divin Brahma !' in no. 3 of Les Pêcheurs de perles.
