Composition: 1871, composed at the same time as the piano duet version Jeux d’enfants, and sharing the same opus number.
A note on the published full score suggests that the piano duet versions were arranged from the orchestral version, rather than the other way round. Bizet resisted identifying these pieces in their orchestral form as 'Children’s Games', preferring the title Petite Suite d’orchestre. No. 1 is a semitone higher in the orchestral version (C minor) than in the piano duet version (B minor).
No. 1 was originally to have been Scherzo (Les Chevaux de bois, no. 4 of Jeux d’enfants), of which no orchestration by Bizet is known; no. 5 was originally to have been Les Quatre Coins (no. 8 of Jeux d’enfants – see Les Quatre Coins).
- No. 1 is derived from no. 19 (Marche et récit) of Ivan IV, omitting bars 1–2 and rewriting the middle section and the end.
Two bars after bar 26 are deleted.
