1er Nocturne

op. 2

[musical score]
120 bars in the autograph.
piano solo

Composition: September 1854, according to the dated autograph. The work’s designation as op. 2 suggests that the four Préludes of 1851–52 had been supplanted. A later work also entitled 1er Nocturne in the key of D was published in 1868.

Autograph score: F-Pn MS. 423, Gift of Reynaldo Hahn. 8-stave paper, oblong 222 x 273 mm., 7 f. (title page, blank, 8 p. of music, 1 collette leaf, 2 blanks).

Bizet's abbreviations in the autograph create a gap, resolved by Poupet in his edition by extending the piece to 133 bars. Facsimile of title page in Mario Bois edition, p. A.
