Nicolas Flamel
opéra
projected
Libretto: Ernest Dubreuil (1833–86), minor dramatist and librettist. The subject was to be Nicolas Flamel (c. 1330–1418), a writer and teacher who amassed a considerable fortune. Innumerable legends were passed down of his successful practice of alchemy. An opéra-comique in three acts of the same title, perhaps on the same libretto, was composed by Edmond-Marie Chérouvrier (b. 1831, mayor of the XIVe Arrondissement) but it was not performed. Chérouvrier, who had competed with Bizet in the 1857 Prix de Rome, collaborated with Dubreuil on an earlier opéra-comique, Le Roi des mines (Théâtre-Lyrique, 22-9-1865).
Composition: 1865, according to Galabert.
