Composition: The song is taken from the opera Djamileh, composed in 1871 and first performed on 22-5-1872. It is made up of the Couplets sung by Haroun (tenor) in no. 2, omitting Splendiano’s interjections. For separate publication it was transposed from F# minor to F minor (high voice) and D minor (low voice). The new accompaniment was different from that in the vocal score.
