Composition: before May 1851, since the following piece in the Stockholm manuscript is dated 4-5-1851. Bizet was twelve years old. He won a first prize in solfège in July 1849. Michel Poupet considered the Paris manuscript to represent an earlier version than the Stockholm version.

The 1er caprice original is on p. 7–10 of the manuscript, headed 1er caprice original / op. 3. The manuscript also contains Prélude en sol, Prélude en mi mineur, Prélude en ut, Prélude en la mineur, Valse, Thème, Romance, Romance sans paroles, and 2me Caprice original.
