Calendal
opéra en quatre actes
projected
Libretto: by Paul Ferrier (1843–1920), after Calendau/Calendal, the epic Provençal poem by Frédéric Mistral (1830–1914) published in 1867. It concerns the fisherman Calendal from Cassis who pursues the elusive Fée Estérelle. They are happily united at the end. Ferrier’s libretto was set by Henri Maréchal (1842–1924) as an opera in three acts and played at the Théâtre des Arts, Rouen, on 21-12-1894 (printed libretto at F-Pn 8o Yth26998, libretto and vocal score at GB-Lbl 11740.eee.3.(9)). Ferrier supplied verses for five songs included in Bizet’s posthumous Seize Mélodies.
Project: 1869 – June 1870, intended for the Opéra-Comique. Bizet had plans for at least two other operas, Grisélidis and Clarisse Harlowe, at the same time. It is not known if he sketched any music for it.
- Autograph libretto: not known. According to Pigot, Bizet copied Ferrier’s libretto using different coloured inks for each character. This copy was returned to Ferrier who gave it to Bizet’s widow on Bizet’s death.
