L’Arlésienne
suite d’orchestre
op. 23bis
Title: Bizet’s work of this name has become known as L’Arlésienne Suite no. 1, since a second suite was arranged by Guiraud and published in 1879 (for Suite no. 2, see this entry, below).
1 | Prélude (= no. 1 of L’Arlésienne)
2 | Minuetto (= no. 17 of L’Arlésienne, with a 6-bar coda added) | (of which 24 are repeated)||
3 | Adagietto (= the Adagio section from no. 19 of L’Arlésienne)
4 | Carillon (= no. 18 of L’Arlésienne with a new bridge into no. 19 – the 6/8 section transposed up to C# minor and extended by 13 bars – then back to no. 18) |
Composition: 1872. During the run of Daudet’s L’Arlésienne in October 1872, Bizet arranged a group of movements for a standard orchestra (with the addition of a saxophone). His original plan seems to have been a suite of five movements, not four, with the Carillon second, the Minuetto fourth, and an unnamed Final. The Carillon was then moved to provide the finale. The suite was performed within a few weeks of the close of the play and rapidly became one of Bizet’s most popular compositions.
Autograph full score: Private collection. 32-stave paper, 64 p. The pagination has been revised to match the new order of movements. Bizet’s original names for the movements have been revised too. The MS has been heavily revised and worked on.
