Sigismond Thalberg (1812–71), L’Art du chant
appliqué au piano, op. 70, two series
of vocal works transcribed for the piano. In 1853
Heugel published the first two series, comprising
twelve pieces. A simplified edition and a piano duet version were made in
1856 by Carl Czerny, who
died the following year. The first set was followed in about 1862–63 by two more series comprising a
further twelve pieces, and it was these that Bizet was
engaged to simplify for piano solo in a similar manner and to arrange for
piano duet.
