Copynotes: | 1.Condition is quite good, although the copy is imperfect with some pages missing internally and at the end (see below). The book was rebacked in the nineteenth century by the firm of Carss, Glasgow (active 1809-1849), replacing the original flyleaves and endpapers. The t-p is particularly marked and dirty, but otherwise the pages are quite clean, other than occasional damp stains, etc; some pages in gathering Nn are torn at the top edge (not affecting text).
2. Collation: A-Pp8, Qq4? (or possibly Qq8, but with the last four
leaves of the gathering missing?):this copy lacks signatures I1 (pages
127-128) and Pp2-8. 4to The book ends at: Qq4v (unnumbered page - possibly cropped in binding) with poem 'To the right honourable ...Countesse of Penbroke' signed ES.
3. Pagination: this is harder to determine since the numbering has
been cropped off on some pages: [i-ii: ie. t-p and t-p verso with dedication] [1]-592+ (last numbered page, being Pp1v, with presumably some missing pages (Pp2r-Pp8v) and then gathering Qq1r-Qq4v present but unnumbered); p.79 misnumbered as 81; 82-83
misnumbered as 84-85; 86-87 misnumbered as 88-89; 90-91 misnumbered as 92-93; 94 misnumbered as 96; p.184 (with woodcut preceding Book II) unnumbered; p.309 misnumbered as p.319; p.317 misnumbered as p.217; p.388 (blank page preceding book III) unnumbered; p.398 misnumbered as 393; p.430 - 3 printed backwards; p.439 misnumbered as 493; p.510 misnumbered as 600;
p.562 misnumbered as 592; p.586 misnumbered as 589; p.590 (blank
page preceding letter) unnumbered; gathering Qq unnumbered.
4. As in the first copy, there are underlinings and marks in the margins in pencil and ink inconsistently throughout the text, as well as occasional comments (usually in pencil in a fairly late hand); some early marginal comments have been cropped.
5. Main differences between two Glasglow copies: p.69 numbered in Sp Coll 171; addition of gathering Qq in Sp Coll 171 (possibly incomplete) with different settings of the dedicatory poems.
