Bound uniformly in contemporary tree calf; spine divided into five compartments by gold tooling, with a floral motif in the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th compartments, and a green leather spine label (Spenser) lettered in gold in the 2nd complartment; board edges tooled in blind.
Condition notes:
Vol. 1: Upper joint rubbed and cracked at the top; lower joint cracked; all board edges rubbed; lower corners bending inwards; upper corners and headcap rubbed.
Vol. 2: Both joints rubbed; upper joint beginning to split at the top; board edges rubbed and corners turning inwards.
Vol. 3: Both joints rubbed; board edges rubbed; corners bending inwards; headcap rubbed with calf peeling off.
Vol. 4: Rubbing to joints and board edges; corners beginning to bend inwards; spine label beginning to peel away (at lower board edge).
Vol. 5: Upper joint rubbed; all board edges rubbed; corners beginning to bend inwards.
Vol. 6: Both joints rubbed; all board edges rubbed; headcap rubbed; upper corners beginning to bend inwards.
Vol. 7: Both joints rubbed; upper joint splitting at top; endcaps rubbed, with calf coming at headcap, and a patch torn away at tailcap (on upper board side); corners rubbed and bending inwards; light scratch to upper board (top left)
Vol. 8: Both joints rubbed; upper joint begin to split at top; all board edges rubbed; corners beginning to bend inwards; rubbing to both boards (more severe on upper board).

With engraved collective title pages (Bell's edition. The poets of Great Britain complete from Chaucer to Churchill. Spencer [sic] volume ...) dated 1778, drawn by [John Hamilton] Mortimer, and engraved by [William] Sharp.
Each volume has an additional letterpress titlepage.
Vol. 3-8 are dated 1788.
Pages v-xviii of vol. 1 contain "The life of Edmund Spenser".
