Copynotes: St Andrews copy imperfect: lacks vol. 7. Each volume bound in contemporary tree calf, with a gold meander frame tooled on both boards; spine tooled in gold, with a red leather spine label ("Spence" [sic]) and green leather volume label; endbands works in green, red, and undyed thread; board edges tooled in gold; with shell marbled endpapers; all edges of text block yellow; with a pink ribbon bookmark. Condition notes: Vol. 1: Corners rubbed (especially top corner of upper board), and beginning to bend inwards; lower joint cracking at top; both joints rubbed; lacks headcap; light abrasion to both boards; ribbon bookmark faded at top and the very tip; clear tape over classmark on spine, extending onto both boards. Vol. 2: Both joints rubbed cracking at top; lower corners beginning to bend inwards; board edges rubbed; both boards rubbed (the upper board more); ribbon bookmark faded at top, middle, and tip; clear tape over classmark on spine, extending onto both boards. Vol. 3: Both joints rubbed; upper joint splitting at top; corners lightly rubbed; lacks headcap; light rubbing to both boards; ribbon bookmark faded at top; clear tape over classmark on spine, extending onto both boards. Vol. 4: Both joints rubbed; upper joint splitting at top; corners rubbed and bending inwards; lacks headcap; rubbing to both boards (more in centre of upper board); ribbon bookmark faded at top and tip; clear tape over classmark on spine, extending onto both boards. Vol. 5: Both joints rubbed; corners rubbed (especially tpo corner of lower board) and bending inwards; lacks headcap; both boards rubbed, especially lower board (with tear to calf upper centre); ribbon bookmark faded at top and tip; green mark on tail edge of text block at spine end. Vol. 6: Joints rubbed; corners rubbed and bending inwards; both boards rubbed; ribbon bookmark faded at top and tip; clear tape over classmark on spine, extending onto both boards. Vol. 8: Joints rubbed; corners rubbed and turning inwards; light rubbing to both boards; tear to calf on lower board; ribbon bookmark faded at tip.
Editionnotes: Vol. 1 frontispiece is an engraved portrait of Edmund Spenser by [Thomas] Cook. With engraved collective title pages (Bell's edition. The poets of Great Britain complete from Chaucer to Churchill. Spencer [sic] volume ...) dated 1778, drawn by [John Hamilton] Mortimer, and engraved by [William] Sharp. Each volume has an additional letterpress titlepage. Colophons dated: 1778. With a slip containing a note from the publisher inserted in vol. VII. Contents: Vols 1-6: Faery Queene, from Mr. Upton's text -- Vol. 7: Shepherd's calendar, Hymns, Visions, Moth.
