Bound in ¾ calf over marbled boards, all edges heavily sprinkled in red, full calf spine with raised bands, each panel stamped in blind, “Spencer’s Works” tooled in gold on brown leather spine label, with illustrated frontispiece.
Editionnotes: The editorship has been attributed, probably erroneously to Dryden. Cf. Johnson, F.R. A critical bibliography of the works of Edmund Spenser, 1933, p. 53-56. The fairy queen part 2, Mother Hubberd’s tale, and The shepherd’s calendar each have separate title pages, dated 1678. There are several pagination sequences. Register is continuous. Includes: "Brittain’s Ida", first attributed to Spenser by Thomas Walkley in 1628; now generally attributed to Phineas Fletcher. Includes Theodore Bathurst’s translation of The shepheardes calendar. Title page is in red and black. Title words "The faery ... &c." are gathered by a left brace. Frontis. plate signed: R White sculp. Most of the pieces have special title-pages dated 1678: Prosopopoia and The shepherds calendar have also separate paging The shepherds calendar has numerous errors in paging. A catalogue of books printed for Jonathan Edwin (1 leaf) inserted after p. 258 "Brittain's Ida", first ascribed to Spenser in 1628 by Thomas Walkley, is now generally assigned to Phineas Fletcher In the British Museum copy of this work, the same misnumbering occurs in the pages, but a portion of the text is missing and the signatures are wrong. The title-page of the poem "Epithalamion" is there, but the poem itself is missing, as are the corresponding Nnn signatures Both editions stop at p.258, signature Kkkk, and continue with p.396, signature Aaaaa. The text, however, is not impaired
