Copynotes: Rare Book and Special Collections Division’s copy is bound in brown sprinkled calf, ruled in blind on covers; cover edges and turn-overs gold embossed; spine has gold rules with embossed floral design between the bands and label in tan calf; top edge gilt, other edges marbled; ms. signature on t.p.: J. Oldham, 1682, is possibly that of the poet John Oldham whose engraved portrait is attached to the front fly-leaf with a booksellers descriptive clipping; provenance: F. Cleveland Morgan.
Editionnotes: "Licensed, October 24th 1678. Roger L’Estrange." Some poems have separate title pages dated: 1678. Title page in red and black. Numerous errors in pagination; incorrect running title for the poem: Astrophel, a pastoral elegy. The poem: Brittain’s Ida, wrongly attributed to Spenser by Thomas Walkley, is now ascribed to Phineas Fletcher, 1582-1650 (cf. Frederick S. Boas,ed. Giles and Phineas Fletcher: poetical works, c1909, vol. 2, p. xiii-xiv). Some text in Latin. Watermark depicting the Arms of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland on p. [393] (cf. A. C. Fox-Davies. Book of public arms, 1915 ed., frontispiece).
