Court for the Third Judicial Circuit of the State
of Missouri

The petition of Adolphe , marcelline
and Maria Minor under the age of 21 years G
Charles D. St their next friend respectifully show
the that they are the children of Louisa vincent a women
of color that they were born at St Louis in this State, that
at the time of their birth, thier said mother was a
slave, the property of the widow & of
Vincent, Bouis . That in the year 1829
Your petitioners were sold at public sale by order
of the County Court of the County of St Louis &
purchased, by one Joshna Pahlen , who took
them to his residence in the State of Illinois
where they remained in his service from one
year to fifteen months, that said Pahlen died
about three or four months , that recently
your petitioners returned to this State and since
their return have been claimed and held as
slaves by marie P. Leone Esp the administrator
of said Pahlen a authority over them as a part
of the property belonging to the estate of said Pahlen
and your petitioners pray that they may be permitted to bring suit, by their next friend Charles D
strain, under the laws of this State as poor persons
against said league for their freedom and
your petitioners will ever pray.

The within named minor Adolphe , marcelline and
maria on the within petition, are hereby permitted to
sue by thin next friend Charles D . , as poor persons
to establish then right to freedom, to the
provisions of the Statute in such case made and
provided and arthur L magrins is hereby assigned
as their Counel. and it i ordered that the said
soolphe, Mareelline, and Maria have reasonable liberty
of attending the Curt & their Counel, when occasion
may require, and that they be nor removed
put of the jurisdiction of thi Court during the pendency
of thi suit, or be subjected by reason thereof
to any seventy. Given under my hand this 3d
day of October 1833.

Adolphe Vincent an infant
under the age of 21 years by Charles D . St Vrain his
next friend, complains of Marie P. Sedue of
a plea of trespass for that whereas the said Adolphe
before and since the Commission of the trespasses herein
after mentioned, by the said Sedue court on the
first day of June in the year 1833 at St Louis
court at the County aforesaid, was and state is a
free person, and the said Sedue The having been on the
day and year cash aforesaid at the county aforesaid
and state being a free person did then, another day &
year last aforesaid and state doth hold him the
said Adolphe in slavery and for that the said
Sedue on the day and year last aforesaid at
the county aforesaid with force and army an assault
upon him the said Adolphe did make and then
and there heat praised still heated him the said Adolphe
keptunclear> & detained him in prison there, without any reasonable
or probable, Cause whatsoever for a long space of time
court from the day and year last aforesaid until the
commencement of this cuit contrary to the Louis of
this land and against the will of him the said Adolphe

wrong to him the said Adolphe then and there
did to the damage of the said Adolphe of one hundred
dollars & therefore he brings his said &c.

We command you to Summon Marie P Sedue that he be and appear before the
Judge of our circuit court at the next term thereof to be held at the city of St Louis
within and for the county of Saint Louis on the fourth Monday of November next
then and there to answer unto Adolphe Vincent an in infant under the age of 21
years who by Charles D . St Vrain his next friend of a plea of trespass to the damage of
the said Adolphe of one hundred dollars and have you then there this writ.

office this fourth day of October one thousand eight hundred and

Copy of the order of the Judge endorsed on the petition of the plaintiffs

The Witness named minors Adolphe Marcelline , and Maria on the within petitioners
hereby permitted to sue by their next friend Charles D . St Vrain , as poor persons
to establish their right to freedom, agreeably to the provisions of the statute in such
case made and provided and Arthur L Magenis is hereby assigned as their
council, and it is ordered that the said Adolphe Marceline and Maria , have reasonable
liberty of attending the court & their counsel, when occasion may require, and that
they be not removed out of the jurisdiction of this court during the pendency of this
suit or be subjected by reason thereof to any seventy. Given under my hand this

--Greeting.

We, reposing special trust and confidence in your integrity and circumspection, do require and command you that you cause
to come before you such person or psersons as shall be named to you by Adolph Vincent by the next friend of Mary P
Ladue attorney or agent, and him or them examine upon
his, her or their corporal oath (to be by you admistered) touching their knowledge of any thing that may relate to a certain matter
of controversy, now pending in our Circuit Court , for the county of St. Louis , wherein Adolph Vincent by his
next friend plaintiff and Mary P Ladue is
defendnat on the part of the plaintiff and having so reduced the said depositions so taken by
you as aforesaid into writing, you are required to send the same, together with this commission, enclosed under your seal, to our
said Circuit Court , with all convenient speed.

the County of Hancock and State of Illinois before me
S To command an acting justice of the peace in & for the County
& state aforeaid in a certain caue, now depending in the
St Louis Cicuit Court for the County of St Louis & state
of Missouri between Adolphe vincent an in fant of Colen by
his next friend vs Marie P Ledue Defendant on the part of
the said Aoolphe Vincent plantiff

I save land of Lawful
ago being produceed sworn & examined on the part of the plantiff in the above case. Doposeth & says that he believes
that the above named Adolphe vincent infant of color
was generally with his mother Louisa vincent when he
saw her residing at Fort Edwards in Hancock Co , Ills, and
therefore belives the aforesaid infant residence to he
identified with his mother Louise vincent residence
at the place aforesaid, and further thi deponant saith
not

in & for the County of Hancock & state of Illinois
hen by certify that save Garland . the Deponant, was by me sworn
to testify thewholetruth of his knowledge touching the matter
in controversy in the caue aforesaid; that was examined,

subscribed by said Deponant in my presenceon
the twenty eight day of October in the year Eighteen
hundred and thirty four, be between the hours
of 12 O clock noon and 5 o clock afternoon same
