To the HonWmC Carr Judge St Louis Circuit Court
The petition of Jack a man of colour sometimes
called Jack Barton represents that when he was
about nine or ten years old he was brought from
the State of Kentucky to the then territory now State
of Illinois by one James Fulton where he residedas
a slave with said Fulton near Kaskaskia upwards
of one year, shortly after which said Fulton died
and your petitioner was sold at the sale of said
Fultons personal property and was purchased by Joseph
with whom be lived about nine years in
the state of Illinois , and then moved with said Barton
to the state of Missouri where he lived with him about
three years when he died, and your petitioner then
returned to Kaskaskia with the window of said
Barton in whose service he continued some time in
Illinois & some time in Missouri untill about April
last when your petitioner was informed and belives
he was sold by Mr. Barton to the farm of Glasgow
Ross &C. as whose slave your petitioner is now
held by William Glasgow of the City of St Louis ,
and therefore your petitioner prays your Honor
to punish him under the law of the state of Missouri
to sue for his freedom

who being duly sworn says that the facts stated in the
foregoing petitioner are true to the best of his knowledge

The within named Jack
Barlow is permitted to sue as a poor person on the
within petition to establish his freedom; and the
Clerk of the St Louis Circuit Court is hereby directed
to issue the necessary processthereon for that purpose -
and it is further ordered that the petitioner
shall not be taken or removed out of the jurisdiction
of this court nor be subject to any severity because
of his application of freedom; and that he have reasonable
liberty to attend his council and the Court
as occasion may require

Complains of William Glasgow and Glasgow
& C. of a plea of trespass with force & arms; For
that the said William Glasgow on the 9th day of
July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight
hundred and thirty two with force and arms
made an assault upon the said Jack to wit, at
the County of St Louis State of Missouri
and then and there beat, bruised and ill treated
him the said Jack and kept and detained him
in prison without any reasonable or probable
cause, for a long time to wit, for the space
of twenty four hours then next following
; and the said Jack in fact avers that before
and at the time of committing the said grievences
he was and still is a free person and that the
defendants held and detained him and still
holds and detains him in slavery against his
will and contrary to the law of the land and
other wrongs and injuries the said defendants, to
the plaintiff then and there did to his great
damage, wherefore he says he is injured and
hath sustained damage in the sum of five hundred dollars and therefore he sues & C

Glasgow & C that they be and appear before the Judge of our
Circuit Court at the next November term thereof to be held at the City

fourth Monday of November next then and there to answer
unto Jack sometimes called Jack Barton of a plea of Trespass
with force and arms &C wherefore he says he is injured and hath
sustained damage in the sum of Five hundred dollars and
have you then there this writ
