St Louis County ssTo the Sheriff of St Louis County Greetings
We command you to summon John Reynolds that he be and appear before
the Judge of our Circuit Court at the next Term Thereof to be held at the city of
St Louis within and for the County of St Louis on the fourth monday of
July next then and these to answer unto John a free boy of colour of a plea
of trespass wherefore the said John say he is injured and hath sustained damages
to the amount, of One Hundred dollars and have you then there this writ

John a free boy of color who is permitted
by the court to sue by his next friend as,
a poor person by Charles his attorney assigned as
by the Court Complains of John Reynold of a plea of
trespass.,. For that the said defendant heretofore trial
on the first day of January in the year eighteen hund-
red and twenty eight with force and at the city
of St Louis , unlawfully an assault did make upon
the body of said John and then and there did ,
bruise,, and illtreat him said John , and then and
there imprisoned him said John and kept and detained,
him in prison without any just, or reasonable cause,
whatsoever, against the will of said John , and
has so, since, kept and detained, him the said John
in prison and still keeps and detains him in prison
against his will,, without any reasonable or probable cause,
whatsoever, countrary to the laws of this state, And the
said defendant other arranged, then and there did
him the said John against the and diginity,
the stil wherefore the said John says he is
by the said defendant and has, sustained, damages,
to the of one hundred dollars and

And the said Plaintiff , that before and at the time
the committing of the said several grievances he was and
still is a free person and that the defendant holds and
detains him in slavery, and the said de,
dant, other wrongs then and there did to him
John , against the peace and diginty of the states
wherefore the said John says he is injured and hath sus-,
tained, damages to the amount of one hundred dol-
lars and therefore he sues Charles Atty
