Complains of William Bird of a plea of trespass
For that the said William Bird on the first day
of September in the year of our Lord one thousand
eight hundred
and thirty seven with force and
arm at St. Louis in the County of St. Louis made
an assault, upon the said Phebe Stubbs
to wit at the County aforesaid and then and there
imprisoned the said Phebe Stubbs and kept and
detained her in person then without any reasonable
or probable cause whatever for a long space of time
to wit for the space of one month then next following
contrary to the laws of this state and against
thewill of the said, Phebe Stubbs and then
Phebe Stubbs avers that before and at the time
she was and still is a free person and that the
said William Bird held and still holds
her in slavery and other wrongs to the said
Phebe Stubbs then and there did against
the peace of this state and the damage
of the said Phebe Stubbs one thousand
dollars and thereforeshe brings this suit
