Nancy Stubbs by Hudson her attorney
complains of William Burd of a plea of
trespass. For that the said William Burd on the
first day of September in the year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and thirty seven with
force and arms at St Louis in the County of
St Louis made anassault upon the said Nancy
Stubbs to wit at the County aforesaid and then and
there imprisoned the said Nancy Stubbs and kept
and detained her in prison, then without any reason
or probable cause whatever for a long space of
time to wit for the space of one month then next
ensuring contrary with the laws of this state and
against the will of the said Nancy Stubbs
and the said Nancy Stubbs avers that before
and at the time she was and still is a free
person and that the said William Burd
held and still holds her in slavery and other
wrongs to the said Nancy Stubbs there &
then did against the peace of this state and
to the damage of the said Nancy Stubbs
one hundred dollers therefore she brings
her suit &c
