State of Missouri Circuit Court third Judicial Circuit term AD 1835

St Louis County Ss Sally Mellvin a woman of color by Bird
her attorney complains of Robert Cohen of a
plea of trespass on the case for that
heretofore to wit on the third a day of April in the
year of eighteen hundred & thirty five at
St Louis . The aforesaid defendant with force & arms an assault
did make & her the said Sally did then & there
beat wound & ill treat & unlawfully imprison
& hath kept & detained her in prison there
from the day lastaforesaid until this day
And the plaintiff avers that at & before the
commiting said several grievances the defendant
was & still is a free person & that the plaintiff
held & detained & still holds & detains her in slavery wherefore the plaintiff says she is
greatly injured & hath sustained Damage to
five hundred dollars & therefore she sues &c

The State of Missouri To the sheriff of the county of Saint Louis greeting

We command you to summon Robert Cohen that he be and appear before
the Judge of our circuit court at the next term therof to be held at the city of St
Louis witiin and for the county of Saint Louis on the fourth Monday of July next
then and there to answer unto Sally Mellvin a woman of color of a plea of trespass on
the case wherefore the plaintiff says she is greatly injured and hath sustained damage to
five Hundred dollars and have you then there this writ

Court at office this forth day of April in the year
one thousand eight Hundred and thirty five Archibald Gamble Clerk

Executed this writ by reading it and the declaration to Robert Cohen on the 4th day of April 1835
in the county of St. Louis

hath complained against him & of this he
puts himself upon the county &c.
