The State of Missouri To the Sheriff of said County — Greeting
You an hereby commanded to have the body of James Young de
tained in the prison of the County aforesaid under your custody as it is
said under a safe and secure conducet together with the day and
cause of his being taken and detained by whatever name he shall
be called in the same before our Circuit Court within and for the County
of St Louis now in session at the City of St Louis immediately after the
reciept of this writ to do and receive all and singular show things which
our said County shall then and there consider concerning him in
this behalf and have you then there this writ

Whereas a certain negroman who calls himself
James Young and says he is free but has no letters
of emancipation with him, nor has he in anyway
satisfied me of his claim to freedom, these are there
fore to require you to take the said James Young into
your safe keeping, and discharge him when thereun
to required by law - & for which this shall be your
warrant, given under my hand this 11th October
1823.
