December Term Eighteen Hundred
and Twenty —In the Circuit Court
St Louis County to wit

The jurors for the state of Missouri
upon their oaths present that James Watt late of the sd
County of St Louis Grocer on the first day of July in
the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and twenty with
force and arms at the county of St Louis aforesaid, A large
quantity of Beaver skins to wit: eighteen Packs of Bea
-ver skins of great value to wit of the value of Three
hundred dollars for each pack of the goods & Chattles of
Joshua Pilcher , Joseph Perkins , Andrew Woods, Moses
Carson, John B Tanone & Thomas Hempstead , the
surviving partners of a company of fur traders, trading
under the style and firm of "the Missouri Fur Company "
then and there being found, feloniously did steal take &
carry away contrary to the form of the statute in such
case made and provided and against the peace &
Dignity of the ( United States of America ) & of the
State —

And the jurors aforesaid upon their oath aforesaid
do further present that the said James Watt on the first
day of July in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and
twenty with force and arms, at St Louis in the County afore
said unlawfully and unjustly did receive & have a large
quality of Beaver skins to wit eighteen packs of Beaver
skins of great value to wit of the value of Three hundred
dollars for each pack and a large quantity of Racoon
skins to wit Two packs of Racoon skins of great val
-ue to wit of the value of one Hundred dollars for each
pack of the goods and Chattles of Joshua Pilcher , Jo
-seph Perkins, Andrew Woods, Moses Carson , John
B . Tanone , & Thomas Hempstead , the survivings

partners of a company of Fur Traders, using the style
& firm of the Missouri fur Company", then lately
before feloniously stolen taken & carried away by
the George Late the slave of Manuel Lisa Deceased
he the said James Watt then & There well knowing
the same to be stolen & unlawfully come by Con
trary to form of the the Statute in such case made & provided
& against the Peace & Dignity of the ( United States of America ) and of the State.

Be it remembered that on the ninth day of October in
the forty fifth year of the independance of the United States
of A.ca and the first of this common wealth (A. D. 1820)
before as P. Walsh and Francis M. Gryal, two parties
of the peace within and for said county personally appeared
James A . Watt . as principal and Robert Watt
Moses Scott , Thomas Heely, Samuel R. Ober of the county
who acknowledged themselves to be indebted to the state—
of Missouri , that is to say, the said James A . Watt
in the sum of One thousand dollars and the said
Robert Watt , Moses Scott , Thomas Heely and Samuel R. Ober each and
every of them in the sum of five hundred and fifty dollars to
be levied upon each of their goods and chattels, lands and
tenements upon the following condition to wit: that the
aforesaid bounden James A . Watt , that be and
appear before the next circuit count, on the first day—
of the term thereof, said court to be holden at the
town of St. Louis , on the first monday in December,
then and show to answer an indictment to be
to the grand jury for and that he shall not depart
said court until he be discharged or by leave of said
court, then this Recognisance to be made and
null else to in full force and virtue

at law as is within expand and contained —

Personally appeared before us P. Walsh and Francis M. Guyol
two justices of the peace in the said county, Robert Walsh Arthew is
who made oath that he was present at the office of John
R . Guy when the three packs of beaver, found in the possession
of James Watt were deposited at the office and in the
case of said John Greg a petition of the peace. — and
further affiant sayth not.—

command you, that the body of James A Watt now in the
jail of this county, under your cus tody, as it is said
detained under safe and secure conduct, together with
the day and cause of his being taken and detained, by
whatever name the said James A . Watt may be
charged in the same, you have before us, at the office
of said P. Walsh , in the town of St. Louis on this day
at the hour of ten in the morning, then and there
to submit to and receive whatsoever we shall
consider on that behalf. Given under our hands
and seals this ninth day of October eighteen
hundred and twenty.
